On Flying Machines and Flying Creatures

Itay Epstein

Who controls these secrets better in the modern age - man or naturally borne flyers? Do we still have anything to learn from nature's frequent pilots?

Abstract

From the dawn of man, as he gazed upon the ancient birds flying above him elegantly, man wanted to conquer the blue skies and fly like the birds. At the beginning man had tried to imitate the birds in a strange variety of ways, but as humanity evolved, the understanding of the avian world also evolved. Bit by bit he managed to discover the secrets of the 3rd dimension, and control it to such an extent that huge machines weighing hundreds of tons airborne, can fly from one end of the globe to the other as easily and frequently as done in the modern world. What are the deep secrets of aviation that in the past belonged only to birds and other flying insects? Who controls these secrets better in the modern age - man or naturally borne flyers? Do we still have anything to learn from nature's frequent pilots?
